Getting there from the United States

Galápagos from your city, routes and timings that actually work

Thirteen U.S. cities, one goal: the deck of a small yacht in the Galápagos. Pick your departure city for the routes, flight times, time-zone math and a day-by-day plan built around the one rule that matters — a night on the mainland before the islands flight.

Five U.S. airports fly nonstop to Ecuador

Miami, Fort Lauderdale, New York JFK, Houston and Atlanta have year-round nonstop service to Quito or Guayaquil — four to six and a half hours in the air. Every Galápagos trip from the United States passes through one of them, or through Panama City (Copa) or Bogotá (Avianca). The pages below give each city its own routes, timings, time-zone math and a day-by-day plan.

Miami

4 h 15 min — nonstop MIA → Quito (American, LATAM). Miami is the best-connected U.S.

Plan from Miami

New York

6 h 20 min — nonstop JFK → Quito (Avianca). From JFK, Ecuador is a six-hour nonstop — shorter than New York to London.

Plan from New York

Houston

5 h 20 min — nonstop IAH → Quito (United). United's evening nonstop from Bush Intercontinental to Quito is the route that opens the Galápagos to Texas, the Mountain states and much of the West Coast with a single connection.

Plan from Houston

Atlanta

5 h 10 min — nonstop ATL → Quito (Delta). Delta's daily afternoon nonstop from Hartsfield-Jackson to Quito lands in time for dinner, which makes Atlanta the most comfortable East Coast departure after Miami — and, through Delta's hub, the natural start for travelers across the Southeast and Midwest..

Plan from Atlanta

Fort Lauderdale

4 h 20 min — nonstop FLL → Guayaquil (JetBlue). JetBlue's midday nonstop from Fort Lauderdale to Guayaquil is frequently the cheapest way from the United States to Ecuador, and Guayaquil is the closest mainland airport to the islands.

One stop from the rest of the country

From the West Coast, the Mountain states, Texas, the Midwest and the Northeast, the trip is a single connection — usually eight to fourteen hours in the air depending on where you start. The overnight hub routings via Panama City and Bogotá land you in Ecuador by late morning with the day free; the daytime routings via Miami and Atlanta arrive in the evening.

Los Angeles

10–12 h — total travel time, one stop. There is no nonstop from the West Coast to Ecuador, but Los Angeles has four good one-stop routes, and the overnight versions land you in Quito or Guayaquil by mid-morning with the day free.

Plan from Los Angeles

San Francisco

11–13 h — total travel time, one stop. Bay Area travelers have two strong one-stop routes to Ecuador — United through Houston and Copa overnight through Panama City — plus American via Miami.

Plan from San Francisco

Seattle

12–14 h — total travel time, one stop. Seattle is the farthest major U.S.

Plan from Seattle

Denver

9–11 h — total travel time, one stop. Denver is one of the easiest connecting cities for the Galápagos: a two-and-a-half-hour hop to Houston meets United's evening nonstop to Quito, and Copa flies Denver to Panama City with a short onward hop.

Plan from Denver

Dallas

8–10 h — total travel time, one stop. Dallas–Fort Worth has no nonstop to Ecuador, but Houston's is an hour away and American's Miami hub is under three.

Plan from Dallas

Chicago

9–11 h — total travel time, one stop. O'Hare connects to every U.S.

Plan from Chicago

Boston

8–10 h — total travel time, one stop. New England reaches Ecuador with one stop — American through Miami or Delta through Atlanta by day, Copa through Panama City overnight, or JetBlue through JFK with an evening positioning flight.

Plan from Boston

Washington, DC

8–10 h — total travel time, one stop. From Dulles, Reagan National or BWI, Ecuador is a single connection away: American through Miami, Delta through Atlanta, United through Houston or Copa through Panama City.

The rules that apply from every city

  • No international flights land in the Galápagos. You fly to Quito (UIO) or Guayaquil (GYE), spend a night, and take a morning Avianca or LATAM flight to Baltra or San Cristóbal.
  • The mainland night is not optional. Islands flights leave in the morning and yachts sail on schedule. Dana Tours will not sell a same-day connection, and neither will any reputable operator.
  • Fees and documents are the same from everywhere: passport valid six months, no visa, $20 transit card, $200 park fee in cash, online biosecurity declaration. Details on the main guide.
  • The buffer night can be the best night of the trip. Two hours from Quito's airport, Las Terrazas de Dana Boutique Lodge & Spa in Mindo Cloud Forest is included with every Dana Tours cruise booking, usually 2–3 nights and more on request, with meals and transfers.

Questions U.S. travelers ask

What is the closest U.S. city to the Galápagos?

Miami — about 4 h 15 min nonstop to Quito and 4 h 30 min to Guayaquil. Fort Lauderdale, thirty miles north, is similar. From the islands themselves, the mainland flight adds roughly two hours.

Can I fly from the U.S. to the Galápagos in one day?

Not reliably. Islands flights leave Quito and Guayaquil in the morning; even the earliest overnight arrivals from the U.S. cut it too fine, and yachts do not wait. Plan a night on the mainland — in Mindo Cloud Forest if you fly into Quito.

Which airlines fly from the U.S. to Ecuador?

American, LATAM and Avianca from Miami; Avianca, JetBlue and LATAM from New York JFK; JetBlue from Fort Lauderdale; United from Houston; Delta from Atlanta. Copa (via Panama City) and Avianca (via Bogotá) connect the rest of the country.
