From Fort Lauderdale to the islands

Galápagos from Fort Lauderdale, South Florida's value route

JetBlue's midday nonstop from Fort Lauderdale to Guayaquil is frequently the cheapest way from the United States to Ecuador, and Guayaquil is the closest mainland airport to the islands. Add Miami's options thirty miles south and South Florida has more ways to reach the Galápagos than anywhere else in the country.

Guayaquil → Baltra the next morning1 h 45 min

JetBlue leaves Fort Lauderdale around noon and lands in Guayaquil mid-afternoon, which is exactly the arrival you want before a cruise: time for a riverside walk on the Malecón, an early dinner, and a full night's sleep before the morning hop to Baltra or San Cristóbal. The route runs about five days a week, so check the schedule against your embarkation date — and if JetBlue's days do not fit, Miami's nonstops are a half-hour drive away.

Palm Beach, Boca Raton and the Treasure Coast all use this route; Fort Lauderdale is also JetBlue's connecting point for Boston and New York travelers who prefer a daytime routing.

Time zones and jet lag from Fort Lauderdale

Mainland Ecuador runs on UTC−5 all year, so it is on Fort Lauderdale time from early November to mid-March and one hour behind you while you are on daylight saving time. The islands are one hour behind the mainland. In practice you never adjust your body clock: a 6 a.m. wildlife walk in the Galápagos feels like 7 or 8 a.m. at home.

Quito or Guayaquil from Fort Lauderdale?

From Fort Lauderdale the nonstop decides it: Guayaquil. It is sea level, hot and humid, with a short islands flight — the efficient choice. If you want the cloud forest or the Andes, do it after the cruise: fly Baltra to Quito (many islands flights continue there), spend two nights in Mindo Cloud Forest, and fly home from Quito via Miami.

Before you leave Fort Lauderdale: the five-item checklist

  • Passport valid six months past your arrival date. U.S. citizens need no visa for stays up to 90 days. Keep a photo of the data page on your phone.
  • Transit Control Card ($20). Pre-register online, then pay in cash at the Consejo de Gobierno counter at Quito or Guayaquil airport before you check in for the islands flight.
  • Biosecurity declaration. Free online form, 48–72 hours before the islands flight. No fresh fruit, seeds or plants in your bags; all luggage is inspected and sealed.
  • $200 cash per adult ($100 under 12) for the national park fee, paid on arrival at Baltra or San Cristóbal. Bring it in $20 bills from home — it is the same currency.
  • Islands flight that matches your yacht. Baltra or San Cristóbal, morning departure, on the embarkation day. Dana Tours books it with the cruise so the airports and dates always line up.

The U.S.-citizen summary is on the main guide; the full detail is in Galápagos entry requirements and the entry fee and TCT card on Galápagos Dana Tours.

Tips from travelers who have done it from Fort Lauderdale

  • JetBlue's schedule on this route has changed several times in recent years; confirm the operating days before you lock in a cruise date.
  • Guayaquil hotels near the Malecón or the airport are both fine for one night; the airport is only 15–20 minutes from downtown.
  • JetBlue allows one free carry-on bag on most fares but not always a free checked bag — budget for it, and remember the islands flights have their own 23 kg checked limit.
  • Fort Lauderdale cruise-port regulars: a Galápagos yacht is nothing like a Caribbean ship. Sixteen to twenty passengers, naturalist guides, two landings a day — read small vs large ships before you choose.

Questions U.S. travelers ask
