Galápagos from Seattle, the long way to the Equator, done right
Seattle is the farthest major U.S. city from the Galápagos, but the trip is still a single connection: United through Houston, Delta through Atlanta or American through Miami, twelve to fourteen hours in the air, then the mainland night and the islands flight. Pacific Northwest travelers are, in our experience, the ones who linger longest.

Three hubs do the work from Sea-Tac. United's Houston connection reaches Quito after midnight; Delta's Atlanta connection lands in Quito in the evening — the gentlest timing, and Delta's Seattle hub has several daily Atlanta flights to choose from; American via Miami is the longest but the most flexible, with both Quito and Guayaquil available. Alaska Airlines flyers can position to any of the three hubs on partner tickets.
Because the first day is long, Seattle travelers should treat the mainland night as a true rest day rather than a waypoint — and the cloud forest at Mindo, where the temperature is a Seattle-friendly 70°F, is the place to spend it.
Route options from Seattle
| Route | Airline | Flight time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| SEA → Atlanta → Quito | Delta | ≈ 10½ h in the air | Early-morning departure, afternoon connection, evening arrival in Quito. The most civilized timing. |
| SEA → Houston → Quito | United | ≈ 10 h | Mid-morning departure, evening connection, arrive after midnight. |
| SEA → Miami → Quito or Guayaquil | American | ≈ 11–12 h | Overnight to Miami then a morning or afternoon nonstop; the Guayaquil option. |
Schedules as published for October 2026; airlines adjust Ecuador routes seasonally. Confirm with the carrier before booking the cruise, and book the Ecuador legs on a single ticket so a late first flight is the airline's responsibility.

A sample 8-day cruise from Seattle, day by day
With Delta's timing, Seattle travelers arrive in Quito in the evening and get a genuine recovery day before the islands.
| Day | Where you are | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | SEA → Atlanta → Quito | Early flight to ATL (≈ 5 h), afternoon nonstop to Quito (≈ 5 h 10 min). Land in the evening; airport hotel or late transfer to Mindo. |
| Day 2 | Mindo | Rest day in the cloud forest: birding, waterfalls, spa. Essential after the long first day. |
| Day 3 | Quito → Baltra | Morning islands flight; embark midday. |
| Days 3–10 | On the yacht | 8-day cruise. |
| Day 10 | Baltra → Quito | Land mid-afternoon; night in Quito's old town. |
| Day 11 | Quito → Atlanta → SEA | Morning departure from Quito, home the same night Pacific time. |
Built around an 8-day (7-night) cruise embarking at Baltra. Swap in a 4- or 5-day cruise and the plan shrinks by three or four days; see how many days you need on Galápagos Dana Tours.

Time zones and jet lag from Seattle
Mainland Ecuador runs on UTC−5 all year, three hours ahead of Seattle in winter and two in summer. The islands are on UTC−6 — two hours ahead of you in winter, one in summer. It is a shorter shift than a trip to New York, and the overnight flights do most of the adjusting for you.
Quito or Guayaquil from Seattle?
Delta and United both deliver Seattle to Quito, which suits most Northwest travelers — they tend to want the mountains and the cloud forest as well as the islands. Guayaquil via Miami is the fallback for altitude concerns. Either way, do not try to shave the mainland night: from Seattle the arrival is always too late for the morning islands flight.
Before you leave Seattle: the five-item checklist
- Passport valid six months past your arrival date. U.S. citizens need no visa for stays up to 90 days. Keep a photo of the data page on your phone.
- Transit Control Card ($20). Pre-register online, then pay in cash at the Consejo de Gobierno counter at Quito or Guayaquil airport before you check in for the islands flight.
- Biosecurity declaration. Free online form, 48–72 hours before the islands flight. No fresh fruit, seeds or plants in your bags; all luggage is inspected and sealed.
- $200 cash per adult ($100 under 12) for the national park fee, paid on arrival at Baltra or San Cristóbal. Bring it in $20 bills from home — it is the same currency.
- Islands flight that matches your yacht. Baltra or San Cristóbal, morning departure, on the embarkation day. Dana Tours books it with the cruise so the airports and dates always line up.

Tips from travelers who have done it from Seattle
- Delta's early Seattle–Atlanta flights are the key to a same-day Quito connection; book the first or second departure of the morning.
- Pack for three climates in one bag: Seattle, a 70°F cloud forest, and the equatorial sun on the yacht. Reef-safe sunscreen is easier to buy at home than in Quito.
- Winter departures from Sea-Tac can be delayed by weather at either end; the mainland buffer night is non-negotiable from the Northwest.
- Give yourself the extra night after the cruise. The afternoon islands flight plus a same-day evening connection home is possible on paper and miserable in practice.

Questions U.S. travelers ask
How long does it take to fly from Seattle to the Galápagos?
Roughly 12 to 14 hours of flying with one stop to reach Quito or Guayaquil, an overnight on the mainland, then a 2- to 3½-hour flight to the islands. Allow two full travel days in each direction.
Which hub is best from Seattle?
Delta through Atlanta gives the most comfortable arrival (evening in Quito). United through Houston is similar in flying time but lands after midnight. American through Miami is the choice if you want Guayaquil.
Is the trip worth it from so far away?
Travelers from the Northwest tend to combine the cruise with a week on the mainland precisely because the flight is long — Mindo, Quito and the Amazon make a two-week trip that justifies the journey. See combining the Galápagos and Mindo.
