Galápagos from San Francisco, Darwin's islands from the Bay
Bay Area travelers have two strong one-stop routes to Ecuador — United through Houston and Copa overnight through Panama City — plus American via Miami. Eleven to thirteen hours in the air, a night on the mainland, and you are snorkeling with sea lions the following day.

From SFO the quickest routing is United's: a four-hour flight to Houston connecting to the evening nonstop to Quito, arriving after midnight. Copa's overnight to Panama City is the comfortable alternative — seven hours to Tocumen, a short morning connection, and touchdown in Quito or Guayaquil by late morning with the day ahead of you. American via Miami works too, though it adds flying time; it is the route to choose when you want Guayaquil on a single Oneworld ticket.
San Jose and Oakland travelers usually position to SFO, though United also flies Houston from SJC, which saves the Bay Bridge.
Route options from the Bay Area
| Route | Airline | Flight time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| SFO → Houston → Quito | United | ≈ 10 h in the air | Morning or early-afternoon departure, evening connection at IAH, arrive Quito after midnight. |
| SFO → Panama City → Quito or Guayaquil | Copa | ≈ 10½ h | Overnight to Panama; land in Ecuador late morning. The restful option. |
| SFO → Miami → Quito or Guayaquil | American | ≈ 11–12 h | Red-eye to Miami, then a morning or afternoon nonstop. Longest, but flexible on gateway. |
Schedules as published for October 2026; airlines adjust Ecuador routes seasonally. Confirm with the carrier before booking the cruise, and book the Ecuador legs on a single ticket so a late first flight is the airline's responsibility.

A sample 8-day cruise from the Bay Area, day by day
Bay Area travelers do best on the overnight Copa routing or the evening United one — both put you on the mainland in time for a proper buffer day.
| Day | Where you are | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 (evening) | SFO → Panama City | Overnight flight (≈ 7 h); connect at Tocumen early morning. |
| Day 2 | Arrive Quito or Guayaquil | Land late morning. Via Quito, transfer to Mindo; via Guayaquil, a hotel by the river. |
| Day 3 | Mainland → Baltra | Morning islands flight; embark midday. |
| Days 3–10 | On the yacht | 8-day cruise. |
| Day 10 | Baltra → mainland | Land early afternoon; overnight in Quito or Guayaquil. |
| Day 11 | Home | Daytime routing via Houston lands at SFO the same evening; via Panama, overnight and home next morning. |
Built around an 8-day (7-night) cruise embarking at Baltra. Swap in a 4- or 5-day cruise and the plan shrinks by three or four days; see how many days you need on Galápagos Dana Tours.

Time zones and jet lag from the Bay Area
Mainland Ecuador runs on UTC−5 all year, three hours ahead of the Bay Area in winter and two in summer. The islands are on UTC−6 — two hours ahead of you in winter, one in summer. It is a shorter shift than a trip to New York, and the overnight flights do most of the adjusting for you.
Quito or Guayaquil from the Bay Area?
United takes you to Quito; Copa and American give you the choice. For first-timers combining the cruise with mainland Ecuador, Quito and the cloud forest are the richer option. For a cruise-only trip, or for anyone sensitive to altitude, Guayaquil via Panama is the easy answer — sea level all the way, and the shortest islands flight.
Before you leave the Bay Area: the five-item checklist
- Passport valid six months past your arrival date. U.S. citizens need no visa for stays up to 90 days. Keep a photo of the data page on your phone.
- Transit Control Card ($20). Pre-register online, then pay in cash at the Consejo de Gobierno counter at Quito or Guayaquil airport before you check in for the islands flight.
- Biosecurity declaration. Free online form, 48–72 hours before the islands flight. No fresh fruit, seeds or plants in your bags; all luggage is inspected and sealed.
- $200 cash per adult ($100 under 12) for the national park fee, paid on arrival at Baltra or San Cristóbal. Bring it in $20 bills from home — it is the same currency.
- Islands flight that matches your yacht. Baltra or San Cristóbal, morning departure, on the embarkation day. Dana Tours books it with the cruise so the airports and dates always line up.
The U.S.-citizen summary is on the main guide; the full detail is in Galápagos entry requirements and the entry fee and TCT card on Galápagos Dana Tours.
Tips from travelers who have done it from the Bay Area
- Copa's Panama connection is tight but efficient: Tocumen is a single terminal and you stay airside; two hours is comfortable.
- United's after-midnight arrival in Quito calls for an airport hotel in Tababela, then the Mindo transfer in the morning when you can see the road.
- With a three-hour difference in winter, the first morning on the yacht (6 a.m. wake-up) is 3 a.m. Pacific — do the Panama overnight and a Mindo buffer day and you will not feel it.
- Tech-industry travelers: there is effectively no Wi-Fi at sea. Set the out-of-office before the islands flight, not after.

Questions U.S. travelers ask
What is the fastest route from San Francisco to the Galápagos?
United via Houston is the shortest in flying time (about 10 hours to Quito), landing after midnight; Copa via Panama City takes slightly longer but lets you sleep on the long leg and arrive by late morning. Both require the mainland overnight before the islands flight.
Is Quito's altitude a problem after a long flight from the coast?
Most people notice mild breathlessness for a day; arriving at night makes it more noticeable. Drive down to Mindo at 4,100 feet for the buffer night, or fly into sea-level Guayaquil via Panama or Miami.
How many days should I take off work?
Nine working days covers an 8-day cruise with the mainland nights either side when you use two weekends. Many Bay Area travelers do it in eleven calendar days.
