From Houston to the islands

Galápagos from Houston, the gateway for Texas and the West

United's evening nonstop from Bush Intercontinental to Quito is the route that opens the Galápagos to Texas, the Mountain states and much of the West Coast with a single connection. Five hours and twenty minutes after take-off you are in the Andes.

Houston to Quito is a late-day flight: United departs between about 6 p.m. and midnight, landing between roughly 11:30 p.m. and 5 a.m. local time. That timing shapes the plan. The early-evening departure gets you to a hotel near the airport before midnight; the late one lands before dawn, so you arrive with a whole day ahead but a short night behind. Either way the mandatory mainland overnight becomes a natural rest stop, and Mindo's cloud forest — two hours from the airport — is the pleasant way to spend it.

Houston is also the connection point for Austin, San Antonio, Denver, Phoenix, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle on United's network, which is why so many Western travelers' Galápagos trips begin at IAH.

Time zones and jet lag from Houston

Mainland Ecuador runs on UTC−5 all year — one hour ahead of Houston in winter and exactly your time in summer. The islands are on UTC−6, which is Central Standard Time: identical to home in winter and one hour behind during daylight saving time. Jet lag is not a factor.

Quito or Guayaquil from Houston?

From Houston the answer is simple: Quito, because that is where United flies. Guayaquil is reachable with one stop via Panama City or Miami, worth considering only if altitude is a real concern — Quito is at 9,350 feet, and the United flight lands at night when the thin air is most noticeable. For most travelers the remedy is to drive down to Mindo (4,100 feet) for the buffer night rather than to change gateways.

Before you leave Houston: the five-item checklist

  • Passport valid six months past your arrival date. U.S. citizens need no visa for stays up to 90 days. Keep a photo of the data page on your phone.
  • Transit Control Card ($20). Pre-register online, then pay in cash at the Consejo de Gobierno counter at Quito or Guayaquil airport before you check in for the islands flight.
  • Biosecurity declaration. Free online form, 48–72 hours before the islands flight. No fresh fruit, seeds or plants in your bags; all luggage is inspected and sealed.
  • $200 cash per adult ($100 under 12) for the national park fee, paid on arrival at Baltra or San Cristóbal. Bring it in $20 bills from home — it is the same currency.
  • Islands flight that matches your yacht. Baltra or San Cristóbal, morning departure, on the embarkation day. Dana Tours books it with the cruise so the airports and dates always line up.

The U.S.-citizen summary is on the main guide; the full detail is in Galápagos entry requirements and the entry fee and TCT card on Galápagos Dana Tours.

Tips from travelers who have done it from Houston

  • If you are prone to altitude headaches, book the earlier United departure and transfer straight to Mindo; you will sleep 5,000 feet lower than Quito.
  • United's return typically departs Quito in the morning, so plan a final night in Quito after the cruise rather than attempting a same-day connection.
  • Your checked bags are tagged to Quito only. Collect them, clear customs, and keep the islands flight on a separate reservation — Dana Tours books it to match your embarkation day.
  • Houston is the natural hub for Denver, Austin, San Antonio and the West Coast; a 2–4 hour positioning flight lands you at IAH in time for the evening departure.

Questions U.S. travelers ask

How long is the flight from Houston to the Galápagos?

Houston to Quito is about 5 h 20 min nonstop on United. After the required mainland overnight, the islands flight takes 2¼ hours nonstop or up to 3½ with a stop in Guayaquil. Plan on two travel days each way.

Does United fly to Guayaquil from Houston?

Not nonstop as of October 2026. United serves Quito only; for Guayaquil you would connect through Panama City on Copa or Miami on American.

Can I connect from Austin, Dallas or Denver the same day?

Yes. United's evening Quito departure is timed for same-day connections from across Texas and the Mountain states. Allow at least two hours at IAH, and remember your bags will be checked through to Quito only — the islands flight is a separate ticket.
