Summer vacation is when the most American families can travel — and the Galápagos are in their cool season: mild, misty days, cooler water and the year's richest marine life. It is a spectacular time to go and the busiest time to book. This page covers what is specific to a U.S. summer trip; the islands' month-by-month conditions are in the guides linked below.

Choose the boat for the season

From June to November the crossings are livelier, especially on the long western routes, and the water sits around 68–72 °F. A catamaran or a larger ship rides noticeably better than a small monohull, and a wetsuit becomes standard for snorkeling. The details are in catamarans vs monohulls, the seasickness guide and the packing list by season. For whales and penguins, see whales and dolphins and the Galápagos penguin.

Booking a summer cruise from the U.S.

  • Four to six months ahead for first-class and luxury yachts; earlier for the family-oriented ships and for July 4th week.
  • Hold, then fly: a complimentary hold keeps the cabin while you buy flights — summer fares from Miami, Houston and New York rise steadily from spring.
  • Watch June and late August: the edges of summer are where special fares still appear. See the last-minute list.

Questions U.S. travelers ask

Is July or August better for a Galápagos trip?

Both are cool-season months with excellent wildlife. July has whales and seabird chicks; August the coolest, richest water and the first sea lion pups. August is slightly busier. If your school calendar allows, late August or the first days of September are the quietest of the three.

Is the Galápagos too cold in summer?

No — days are mild, in the mid to upper 70s °F. The water is the cool part, around 68–72 °F, which is why yachts provide wetsuits. Bring a fleece for evenings on deck.

How far ahead should I book a summer cruise?

Four to six months for most yachts, earlier for family-oriented ships and July 4th week. Hold the cabin first, then buy flights.
