Planning around a U.S. calendar

The Galápagos on an American calendar, which break, which season, how far ahead

School breaks, federal holidays and PTO decide when most Americans can go. Here is how each one lines up with the Galápagos seasons, how quickly those departures sell out from the U.S., and how many vacation days each cruise length really costs.

Most American travelers don't choose a month for the Galápagos — they choose a break. The table below lines up each school vacation and federal holiday with the Galápagos season it falls in, how hard it is to find cabins from the U.S., and how far ahead to book. Dates are for 2027; school breaks vary by district.

How many vacation days each cruise really takes

There are no international flights to the islands, and the night on the mainland before the islands flight is not optional, so a cruise always costs more calendar days than its length. Door to door, using weekends at both ends:

Questions U.S. travelers ask

When do most Americans visit the Galápagos?

Around U.S. school breaks: winter break, Presidents' Day week, spring break, July–August and Thanksgiving. Those weeks sell out first; the quiet, better-value windows are Memorial Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day and early December.

Can I do the Galápagos over a long weekend from the U.S.?

Not on its own. Even the shortest 4-day cruise takes six to seven days door to door from the East Coast, because of the required night on the mainland before the islands flight. Add three or four PTO days to a holiday weekend.

Which U.S. holidays are cheapest for a Galápagos cruise?

Memorial Day, Labor Day and Columbus Day weekends fall in quiet months with frequent special fares; September has the longest last-minute list of the year. Christmas–New Year, spring break and July–August rarely discount.
